No. 5 seed Kypson Rallies to Defeat Monday in Thrilling Final
American Captures Third Challenger Title of Season
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The second-year MarketBeat Open provided fans with one
of the most exciting finals on the ATP Challenger Tour this season as No. 5
seed Patrick Kypson rallied to defeat unseeded Johannus Monday of Great
Britain 6-7(2), 7-6(4), 7-5, on Sunday.
The 2-hour, 34-minute championship featured only one break as Monday
double-faulted for the only time in the match in the 11th game of the third
set. That was also the only break point the 23-year-old left-hander faced in
the match.
There were no break points in the 44-minute opening set and neither player
went to deuce on his serve. Monday went up 2-0 in the tie-break and did not
lose a point on his serve to secure the opening set 7-2 in the breaker.
In the second set, both players were holding easily until Kypson faced a
break point for the first time, saving two in the 11th game. After Monday
held, a second tie-break was played. Kypson went up a mini-break 2-0, which
proved to be the difference as both players held the rest of the tie-break
with Kypson prevailing 7-4.
In the final set, Kypson saved four break points in the fourth game, which
was the longest of the match (18 points). Both players held the rest of the
way until the 11th game when Monday was broken.
"That was the key and whoever was going to break serve was probably going to
come out on top and I was fortunate to hold tough when I was facing break
points," said Kypson, who saved all six break points in the match. "I was
fortunate enough to snag the only break point I had late in the match."
Kypson, a former All-American at Texas A&M, ranked as low No. 455 on April 7
after being sidelined for three months with a stress fracture in his left
foot. He underwent surgery on Jan. 24 and returned April 21 in Savannah. His
ranking will improve from No. 166 to No. 146.
Since his return, Kypson has won titles on clay, outdoor hard and indoor
hard this season. He is just the third American to accomplish the feat since
1978, joining Robby Ginepri (2002) and Michael Russell (2009).
"I think the margins were so thin today and you could only chalk it up to
continuing to do what you were doing throughout the match," said Kypson, who
will turn 26 on Tuesday. "At the end of the day luck plays a little bit of a
role and I stuck what I was doing and ultimately I was able to save those
break points and come out on top."
It was also a record 20th Challenger title won by an American this season,
breaking the previous-high of 19 in 2006.
"We have a lot of guys ranked between the Top 100 and 200, young guys, a
couple of veterans in there," said Kypson, who will turn 26 on Tuesday. "We
have a pretty strong group of guys right now and we are all trying to push
each other to get into the Top 100. It's pretty impressive to win 20 titles
in a season."
Monday, who played at the University of Tennessee from 2020-2024, was
appearing in his first career Challenger final. He came in ranked No. 238
and afterwards is projected to move to a career-high No. 212 in the PIF ATP
Rankings.
Kypson moved to No. 2 in the Australian Open Wild Card Challenge standings
after week two with three weeks to go. The leader is Eliot Spizzirri, who
was runner-up in the Brest, FRA Challenger on Sunday.
